Biography

After taking a doctorate in Philosophy and Literature at Oviedo University, moved to London to study Musicology. In 1980 made his debut as Director with Verdi´s La Traviata in Oviedo, his hometown. From December1990 to end 1999 was General Director of the Zarzuela Theatre in Madrid, where his first production in1982, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, was followed by many subsequent opera and zarzuela productions.

From october 2001 to august 2005 he was Artistic Director of Teatro Real in Madrid. And from January 2008 to December 2015 of Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao.

Sagi´s stage experience covers styles ranging from Baroque Zarzuela to Modern Opera, having directed as a host of leading national and international theatres and festivals: Communale in Bologna, La Fenice in Venice, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro Comunale in Florence, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova, Sao Carlos in Lisbon, Theatre de l´Odeon, Theatre du Chatelet and Theatre Marigny in Paris, Teatro Maipo, Teatro Colón and Teatro Avenida in Buenos Aires, Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile, Los Angeles Opera, Washington Opera, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Seattle Opera, San Diego Opera, Philadelphia Opera, New Israel Opera in Tel-Aviv, Vienna VolksOper , Theater An Der Wien, Deutch Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, St. Gallen Opera, Opera de Strasbourg, Opera de Bordeaux, Opera de Nice, Opera de Monte-Carlo, Opera de Genève, Theatre du Capitole de Toulouse, Opera de Lausanne, Royal Opera de Wallonie in Liège, Teatro Marynski of Saint Petesburg, Manaus Opera, Nissei Theatre , Bunka Kaikan and New National Theatre in Tokyo, Jiangsu Centre for the Performing arts in Nanjing, Hong-Kong Opera Festival, Osaka Arts Festival, Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Savolinna Festival in Finland, Salzburg Festival, Ravenna Festival, Teatro de la Maestranza in Sevilla, Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, Teatro Arriaga and Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao, Valencia Palau de les Arts, Barcelona Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatro de la Zarzuela and Teatro Real in Madrid.
